What Happens When You Convert JPG to FBX

A JPG carries only what one camera saw from one angle, compressed with lossy DCT math and stripped of any depth or alpha information, so there is no shortcut from pixels to a 3D asset; the model has to be inferred rather than extracted. Hyper3D's AI reconstruction reads the shape, shading and edges in your photo and predicts a complete surface for the object, generating the geometry for sides and undersides that never appeared in the original shot.

FBX is Autodesk's proprietary interchange format, the one Unity and Unreal both treat as a first-class import target for meshes, materials and, when present, animation and rigging data. One quirk worth knowing up front is that FBX's default unit is centimeters, so a model exported at a different scale can come into an engine 100 times too big or too small until you fix the import scale. Confirm the model's pivot point sits where you expect before placing it in a scene, since AI-reconstructed meshes are not always centered on the world origin.

Bake or simplify for performance

If the mesh is dense, run a decimation pass in Blender before the final FBX export to keep polygon count reasonable for real-time rendering.

Getting a Clean FBX From a Photo

Because FBX assets often end up in a real-time scene alongside dozens of other objects, it pays to think about the source photo with performance in mind, not just looks. Shoot the subject with even, soft lighting and a plain background so the AI is not fighting confusing shadows, and pick an angle that shows some depth, since a flat front-on shot gives the reconstruction less information to work with. Avoid highly reflective or transparent objects, which tend to confuse single-view reconstruction and produce noisier geometry than a matte, evenly lit subject.

After export, open the FBX in Blender first to check scale, orientation and polygon count, and run a decimation pass there if the mesh is denser than your engine budget allows. From Blender you can re-export a lighter FBX, or import directly into Unity or Unreal and fix the import scale, since FBX's default centimeter unit is a common source of oversized or tiny assets on first import. Godot also reads FBX now, so the same workflow applies if that is your target engine.
