Using single-photo reconstruction as a sculpting base

The value of a photo-derived base mesh for character work is proportion, not surface detail: it gets rough volumetric geometry into 3D space fast so a sculptor is refining shapes instead of guessing them from a primitive. The output is not production topology, edge flow will not follow anatomy the way a hand-built base mesh does, so a retopology pass in Blender or a ZRemesher run in ZBrush is a required step before any serious sculpting, not an optional polish. Treat the raw mesh as reference geometry to sculpt against rather than a mesh to animate directly.

Single-image reconstruction infers the character's back and hidden side from what a similar pose typically looks like, which means asymmetric poses, one arm raised, a turned head, come back less reliable on the occluded side than a simple symmetric standing pose would. For best results, use maquettes or figures already posed close to the character's default stance, and expect to hand-sculpt asymmetric details, hair, and clothing folds regardless of what the photo shows, since fine cloth and hair detail rarely survives reconstruction cleanly.

  • Use the output for proportion and volume, not for final surface detail or production topology.
