What is an STL file?

STL was introduced by 3D Systems in 1987 alongside the first commercial stereolithography printers, and it remains the closest thing 3D printing has to a universal input format. The format stores only raw geometry as a list of unstructured triangles defined by their vertex coordinates and a facet normal. It carries no color, no material, no units and no scene hierarchy, which keeps files small but also means an STL cannot describe anything beyond a bare surface mesh.

Files come in ASCII or binary flavors, and nearly every slicer defaults to binary because it is far more compact. Because STL has no concept of real world scale, the numbers in the file are just unitless coordinates, so you must confirm millimeters versus inches in your slicer before printing. Preparing your STL for a successful print

An STL fresh off an AI reconstruction is usually close to print ready, but it is worth a repair pass before committing filament. Open it in your slicer first and look at the mesh error report, since Cura, PrusaSlicer and Bambu Studio all flag non-manifold edges or holes. If anything looks off, Meshmixer or the free Windows 3D Builder can auto repair small gaps and remove stray floating geometry left over from background artifacts in the source photo.

Scale is the other thing to check immediately, since STL stores no units. Decide whether the file represents millimeters or inches, set that in your slicer, then resize to the physical dimensions you actually want before generating supports. For thin, delicate features picked up from the photo, add a small wall thickness offset in Meshmixer so the print survives handling.
