What is a 3MF file?

3MF, the 3D Manufacturing Format, was published in 2015 by the 3MF Consortium, a group including Microsoft, HP and several major printer makers, specifically to fix what STL cannot do. Structurally it is a zip archive containing XML files, which lets it describe not just triangle geometry but also color per triangle, multiple materials, real world units and print settings like supports or infill, all inside a single package.

Because it stores units explicitly, a 3MF never has the ambiguous scale problem that plagues STL files, and because it can carry per vertex or per triangle color, an AI reconstruction that captured a colorful photo can preserve that color straight into the sliced print. Modern slicers such as Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer treat 3MF as their native project format, storing plate layout and print profiles alongside the geometry itself.

How to get a 3MF from a photo

Upload a photo

Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB. Colorful, well lit subjects give the reconstruction the most detail to carry into the final color mesh.

Generate the model

The AI rebuilds geometry and bakes color data into a textured GLB mesh, usually in about 60 seconds.

Convert, then load it in your slicer

Import the GLB into Blender or PrusaSlicer and save it as 3MF, then open that file in Bambu Studio or PrusaSlicer with color and scale intact, ready to slice.

Why export as 3MF

Keeps color from the photo

Because 3MF supports per triangle color, the print can reflect the actual colors captured in your source photo, not just bare geometry.

Units are never ambiguous

Unlike STL, 3MF stores real world units inside the file itself, so a model never gets scaled ten times too big by accident in your slicer.

Native to modern slicers

Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer both use 3MF as their project format, so opening the file restores plate position and print settings, not just geometry.

Smaller than you might expect

The zip based XML structure compresses efficiently, so 3MF files often end up comparable in size to STL despite carrying far more information.

Working with your 3MF after download

Open the 3MF directly in Bambu Studio or PrusaSlicer rather than converting it to STL first, since going through STL would strip the color and unit data that make 3MF worth using in the first place. Both slicers read the file's stored units automatically, so double check the plate scale looks right at a glance rather than assuming a manual rescale is needed the way you would with an STL.

If the color mesh needs cleanup, Meshmixer and the Windows 3D Builder both support 3MF and preserve color through basic repair operations like hole filling. For multi-part or multi-material prints, use your slicer's per object or per triangle paint tools to assign different filaments before slicing, since 3MF's material system is what makes that workflow possible in the first place.

  • Open 3MF directly in Bambu Studio or PrusaSlicer to keep color and units intact
  • Avoid converting through STL first, since that step strips color data
  • Use Meshmixer or 3D Builder for repairs that need to preserve mesh color
  • Assign filaments per part with your slicer's material painting tools
  • Check the stored scale looks correct rather than re-measuring by hand
