DXF, short for Drawing Exchange Format, was created by Autodesk in 1982 to let AutoCAD share drawing data with other CAD programs without needing its proprietary DWG format. At its core DXF is fundamentally a 2D and 2.5D format: it stores lines, arcs, polylines, layers and blocks the way a technical drawing does, not a solid volumetric mesh the way STL or OBJ do. It exists in both ASCII and binary variants, with ASCII being the more universally supported.
Because our generator reconstructs a full 3D mesh from your photo and hands it back as a GLB, getting to DXF means projecting that mesh yourself, flattening it into outlines or cross sections rather than a native 3D DXF solid. This is the correct and common workflow when you need CAD-compatible line work for laser cutting, technical drawings or import into AutoCAD, but it is not a substitute for a true parametric CAD model, which DXF was never designed to hold in the first place.

Since the DXF you download is a flattened projection of the 3D reconstruction, the first step in AutoCAD or a similar package should be checking scale and layer organization, since outlines from a photo-derived mesh often land on a single default layer. Split the geometry into meaningful layers before adding dimensions or preparing it for fabrication, and delete any stray line segments left over from background noise in the source photo.
If your real goal is a laser cut or CNC part, open the DXF in your cutter's control software, such as LightBurn, and verify the outline forms closed loops, since open contours will not cut correctly. For anything needing true 3D CAD editing rather than flat outlines, treat the DXF as a tracing reference and rebuild the geometry natively in AutoCAD or Fusion 360 instead of trying to extrude the flattened export back into a solid.
