Note: the generator always returns a textured GLB mesh — that is the only file it produces. The steps on this page cover getting from that GLB to USDZ.

What is a USDZ file?

USDZ is Apple's distribution package for Pixar's Universal Scene Description, introduced in 2018 specifically so iOS could preview 3D and AR content without a dedicated app. It is a zip archive, but with one important restriction: everything inside must be stored uncompressed and unencrypted so the operating system can memory map the file directly instead of decompressing it first. That constraint keeps AR Quick Look launches fast on a phone.

A USDZ bundle usually holds a single USD scene file plus its texture images, packaged as one .usdz for the user to tap. Safari, Messages, Mail, Notes and Files all recognize the extension and hand it to AR Quick Look automatically, which is what lets a link or an AirDropped file open directly into an AR view. USDZ does not carry heavy production pipeline data the way FBX does, but it does support basic animation and simple physically based materials.

How to get a USDZ from a photo

Upload your photo

Add a JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB. A subject shot with even lighting and a simple background reconstructs most reliably for AR viewing.

Generate the model

The AI rebuilds the mesh and bakes PBR textures into a GLB, typically in about 60 seconds.

Convert, then share

Turn the GLB into USDZ with Apple's free Reality Converter or a glTF to USD tool, then open it on an iPhone to launch AR Quick Look, or link to it with the standard AR anchor tag.

Why export as USDZ

No app required

Anyone with an iPhone or iPad can tap a USDZ link and see the model in AR immediately, since Quick Look ships as part of iOS itself.

Works across Apple apps

Safari, Messages, Mail, Notes and Files all recognize USDZ natively, so sharing a model is as simple as sending any other file.

Fast to open

Because nothing inside the zip is compressed, the operating system loads it directly into memory, which keeps AR launch times short.

Web embeddable

A simple anchor tag with rel ar on a webpage lets Safari trigger AR Quick Look for the linked USDZ, no extra AR framework needed.

Working with your USDZ after download

The fastest way to check a USDZ is to AirDrop it to an iPhone or open it directly in Safari, since both hand off to AR Quick Look without any extra app. If you plan to embed it on a website, use a plain anchor tag with the rel ar attribute pointing at the .usdz file, and Safari on iOS will intercept the tap and launch the AR view automatically, no JavaScript AR library required.

For editing, Apple's free Reality Composer app opens USDZ files and lets you reposition, scale or add simple behaviors before re-exporting. If you need heavier mesh edits, round trip through Blender using a USD import plugin or convert to OBJ first, make the changes, then convert back, since Blender's native USDZ support has historically been limited compared to its glTF pipeline.

  • Test the file by AirDropping it to an iPhone to confirm AR Quick Look opens it
  • Embed with a plain anchor tag and rel ar attribute for one tap web AR
  • Use Reality Composer to reposition or scale the model before sharing
  • Convert through OBJ or glTF if you need heavier mesh edits in Blender
  • Keep the archive uncompressed; re-zipping it manually will break AR Quick Look
