Note: the generator always returns a textured GLB mesh — that is the only file it produces. The steps on this page cover getting from that GLB to OBJ.

What is an OBJ file?

OBJ was developed by Wavefront Technologies in the early 1980s for its Advanced Visualizer software, and its plain text structure is exactly why it outlived the company that built it. Every line describes a vertex, a texture coordinate, a normal or a face, which makes the file human readable and simple for any developer to parse. Because it predates modern scene graphs, OBJ has no built in concept of animation, rigging or hierarchy, only static geometry.

Material and texture information does not live inside the .obj file itself. Instead it references a companion .mtl file, which in turn points at external image files for color and other maps. That means converting your generated GLB to OBJ turns one file into a small bundle: the geometry, the material definition, and the baked texture images, all of which need to stay in the same folder to load correctly.

How to get an OBJ from a photo

Upload your photo

Add a JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB. Simple backgrounds and even lighting give the reconstruction the clearest surface to work from.

Let the AI build the mesh

The model reconstructs geometry and UVs from the image and bakes matching textures, finishing in roughly 60 seconds for most photos.

Export to OBJ

Download the GLB, import it into Blender, then export OBJ. Keep the resulting .obj, .mtl and texture files in one folder so the next app finds the materials automatically.

Why export as OBJ

Reads everywhere

OBJ has been supported by nearly every 3D application for four decades, so it is close to the safest choice when you do not know your next tool.

Human readable geometry

Because the file is plain text, you or a script can open it directly to inspect vertex counts or debug a broken import without special tools.

Simple material model

The paired .mtl file describes diffuse, specular and texture maps in an easy to edit format, useful when you need to swap a texture by hand.

Great for archiving

OBJ's stability and text based structure make it a dependable long term storage format that will still open decades from now.

Working with your OBJ after download

Because an OBJ export is really three parts working together, the single most common failure is losing that pairing when you move files around. Always copy the .obj, its .mtl and every referenced texture into the same folder before opening it in Blender, Maya or MeshLab, since a missing texture path shows up as a plain grey mesh even though the geometry loaded fine. Blender's File > Import > Wavefront handles the whole bundle automatically as long as the paths are intact.

If you plan to bring the mesh into a game engine, expect to convert it rather than import OBJ directly, since Unity and Unreal generally prefer FBX or glTF for anything beyond a quick prototype. For CAD adjacent work, MeshLab and Meshmixer both open OBJ for cleanup, decimation or measurement, and either one can re-export to a more specialized format once you are done editing.

  • Keep the .obj, .mtl and texture files together in one folder at all times
  • Import through Blender's Wavefront importer to verify materials loaded
  • Use MeshLab to decimate or clean the mesh before further editing
  • Convert to FBX or GLB before bringing the model into Unity or Unreal
  • Check texture coordinate orientation if maps look mirrored after import
