glTF 2.0 is the Khronos Group's royalty free runtime format, often called the JPEG of 3D because it was designed to load quickly rather than to be the richest authoring format. A .gltf file is plain JSON describing the scene graph, materials and node hierarchy, while the actual vertex and index data lives in a separate .bin buffer and textures sit as their own image files alongside it. That split makes the format easy to inspect and hand edit, unlike its binary sibling GLB.
Because everything is text and standard file types, unpacking the generated GLB into glTF gives you a small folder: the .gltf JSON, one .bin file, and the baked PBR texture images. Any tool that understands the spec, from a code editor to Blender, can open and modify individual pieces without special software. The trade off is that you must keep the whole folder together, since the JSON references its buffer and textures by relative path.

Because a glTF export is a small bundle rather than one file, the first rule is to never separate the .gltf, .bin and texture images, since the JSON references them by relative path and breaks immediately if the folder structure changes. When hosting it on the web, upload the whole folder and point your viewer, such as the model-viewer web component or three.js GLTFLoader, at the .gltf file itself, since both fetch the rest automatically.
If you need to hand edit the file, open the .gltf in a text editor to adjust material properties like roughness or metallic factor without touching geometry, which is far faster than round tripping through a full 3D application.
